Hyde Park Barracks

Local Projects led the concept, exhibit and media design for a new audio-based experience at the Unesco World Heritage site.

Sydney Living Museums tasked Local Projects to completely rethink and redesign an existing institution in order to tell the story more completely. The Hyde Park Barracks, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was the administrative hub for Britain's system of migrating convicts to Australia to work in labor camps across the continent. Previously, the museum explored the experience of the convict population in-depth but did not acknowledge fully the site’s role as an agent of colonial change and its impact on Aboriginal Australia. Local Projects was engaged to transform the experience, weaving together narratives from a variety of diverse perspectives.

Utilizing state-of-the-art bluetooth audio technology and visitor tracking software, Local Projects created a museum experience where visitors can hear a plurality of voices and stories as they move through the galleries, providing them the opportunity to learn and connect emotionally with the subject matter.

“A new benchmark for storytelling finds a fresh balance between multiple voices, where both analogue and tech-driven viewing experiences aim for the authentic, rather than an authoritative tone.” - ArtsHub Australia
